Sehwag's 300
Why is it england never produce players like him? Our best batsman now is pieterson- and lets not forget hes south african. The world cup really exposed our lack of batting talent compared to other nations. Look at some of the best batsmen in tests and odis:
tendulkar
ponting
lara
gayle
hayden
gilchrist
brendon mccullum
sehwag
laxman
inzamam
gibbs
yuvraj
jayasuria
Why arent we producing players like that? We have the best infastructure and coaching in the world and yet we produce good solid test players like vaughn cook and bell but not amazing match winners like the above. Nasser hussain always complains about eng players making big hundreds- well sehwag just made the fastest 300 in test history!
thoughts pls

Re: Sehwag's 300
Cook, Bell and Pietersen are all young guys who have come through the county system in the past few years. We've then got youngsters like Denly, Bopara, Godleman, Luke Wright and many many more still learning their trade. We're getting better at ODi's and i still believe we're one of the top Test Sides in the world.
Wrong section aswell btw.

Sachin is the greatest batsman ever.
Re: Sehwag's 300
I havent seen much of the upcoming talent but I agree that while Bell, Vaughan and Cook are very solid test players their strike rates arent matchwinning for ODI cricket. Pietersen is the only player but I would assume he has learnt to play in South Africa than in England. Perhaps the coaches in England stress on being textbook perfect. Whereas someone like Sehwag who didn't have had access to all the advanced coaching facilities etc, learnt to play largely on his own and developed his own style which the coaches didn't try to change at a later stage.
Of course this is just an assumption since I have very little knowledge of the coaching system in England.

Re: Sehwag's 300
Nah, Pietersen learnt most of his batting prowess in England, he was a bowling all-rounder until he came to England. His Offies were his primary skill until he decided to work on his batting. He obviously had his core batting abilities and style in SA, but the hard work on his batting started in England.

Re: Sehwag's 300
I would say 2 reasons - we rarely produce pitches as flat as in other parts of the world and secondly, we have a massive weakness against spin.
Thinking further afield it probably also comes down to a national mindset.

Re: Sehwag's 300
I agree with A_A on the weakness to play against spin and national mindset.
But is there any development plan to take care of it.
Recently;I read about England Lions playing in the India for the Deodhar trophy(I guess so!!)
Do u think these steps are also good to make Ur players get used to playing in different conditions other than in England.
Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster man,
But sooner or later, the man who wins
Is the fellow who thinks he can.

Re: Sehwag's 300
I think it's fair to say that there are plans to tackled the weaknesses against spin (and indeed, develop more spinners) but these plans take time before the benefits are shown.
Looking at some of the plans coming from the ECB over the last few years then I would say that they are seriously trying to address a number of issues but the proof will be in what happens in the next 5-10 years.
As for sending teams out to play in different conditions then I think it's vital. There is only so much you can do to replicate pitch types indoors\in this country and there is no substitute for actually getting out there and playing.

Re: Sehwag's 300
Hi all,
Might it have something to do with recently being dropped and just wanting to prove a point?

Re: Sehwag's 300
surely he wanted to prove a point. he had even said before the game that he wanted to make an impact but to score 300 you need more than determination. i think the main reason behind sehwag's success is that he doesnt think too much and hes fearless. hes not too concerned about the bowler, the score hes at or the pitch. he treats every ball on its merit. of course having a good hand eye coordination helps.
Chak de India!!

Re: Sehwag's 300
I didn`t mean in any way to belittle his acheivement, Sehwags record speaks for itself. I think it goes without saying that the man is a genius, I just meant that the little extra needed to go from great to god could be something as simple as a desire to prove a point.

Re: Sehwag's 300
You may have a good point there, Palley. I guess being dropped may have focussed his mind a bit more and it's paying off so far - a ton against the Australians and a triple against South Africa.
