Cricket Australia has revealed the reasons why Shane Warne, the leading wicket taker in Test history, wasn't Waugh's successor as the captain of the Australian team.

Quote
f Shane Warne did not know why he was never chosen as Test captain he does now. Cricket Australia's board outlined seven reasons in August 2000 to prevent him from holding a senior leadership role and they have been revealed in the official history of the organisation.
Not captaining Australia was one of Warne's few regrets in an unmatchable career and the crucial decision was made during the fallout from his texting controversy with an English nurse. Warne was cut as vice-captain, being replaced by Adam Gilchrist, and the board minutes record the reasons behind the move.

* Taught a lesson
* Leadership brings other responsibilities
* Given opportunities and shown that he can't
* Not this one issue (texting)
* History of incidents
* Catalogue of reckless conduct
* Responsibility to maintain public confidence

The Aussies win pretty much everything so you can't really say he would have been more successful. His antics off the field didn't affect his performance on the field, and I don't think it would have affected his captaincy.

I saw that article yesterday and really didn't see the point in making it public.

Warne would have been a great captain but I guess the threat of him doing something stupid was too high.

If it was any other team then he would have been a shoo in for the captaincy as he does possess one of the greatest cricket brains around.

However, Australia knew that due to the strength of the team they could afford to ignore the extra 3 or 5% his captaincy would bring and at the same time remove the risk of him getting caught with his pants down and embarrassing the team.

I dont know if he could take responsibility because he did many bad things like taking drugs without knowing what they were and sex scandals. So I think they were afraid that if he was captain then the image of the team would spoil.

Lol this seems so foolish now. He has proved how great he is as a captain. I think Australia would have won Ashes 05 if Warne was the captain. They are fortunate that the team was so strong otherwise there is no way Warne could have been kept away from captaincy. I always had respect for Warne but after seeing what he has done with the Royals team it has grown 100 times.

Captains have to be leaders and set examples off the field as well. I certainly agree with CA's point.

What Jonesy says is completely true. You can't have a captain who is going to act like a goose every time they step off the field. He may have been great, but then he may not have.

Well I think a cricketer should be judged by his actions on the field, not off it. If he was given the responsibility of captaining the team he might have behaved better off the field too knowing that the reputation of the team is on stake. I think its not a big deal now since Australia always had such a strong team but if they werent as strong then Warne's captaincy could have made a difference.

Not in Australia. A captain is the spokesperson for the team. They are the role model for the rest of the team. Sure he may have been better behaved when he got the responsibility, but his reputation was tarnished

Its the same everywhere in the world. The media will follow the players life off the field. Im just saying that people shouldnt read too much into it. People say that they are role models for kids etc but they dont realise that they are supposed to be role models on the field not off it. A cricketer should have the freedom to do what he wants off the field as long as he isnt breaking the law.

But it's not a good example of how you want your players to be, you wouldn't want all of your team doing that. Players come to captains for advice; life advice and game advice, and I don't think the team would run very smoothly at all if the captain was constantly getting bad press.

The Captain is a role-model for is team and a brand ambassador for his country like Steve Waugh.
His on-field and more importantly "Off-field" behaviour will be monitored by Media and watch by people.
So a Clean image is expected from him.
Unfortunately;Warne being a good player could not manage personal life's mess which he paid heavily by not becoming the Captain.
Now being the Captain of Rajasthan Royals in IPL; he has got any golden opportunity to mend his ways.
Currently he is going strong and leading in the points table.
Hopefully;he will lead Rajasthan Royals to the finals.

Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster man,
But sooner or later, the man who wins
Is the fellow who thinks he can.
